Prisoner still free after one week

Letter to the County Watchers

Although I moved to California one year ago, I continue to track what is happening in my home area, where in 2004 my late son Geoffrey Gelfand suffered in horrible pain as a Union County Jail inmate, his throat cancer having been completely neglected, undiagnosed and untreated despite his repeated, emphatic, desperate pleas for help.

The undeniable proof of it was that upon being transferred to state prison, his condition was so obviously dire that within 48 hours my son was placed in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, and I was immediately notified by phone from the prison that “Mr Gelfand, your son has cancer”.

My son made the youthful mistake of trying to gain money by selling minute amounts of marijuana, I had no concept of how much difference could be made had we gotten an attorney familiar with Union County or how to afford one, and so we were completely susceptible to the prevalent inequities and cruel and uncaring attitudes.

Tina, I for one greatly appreciate your persistent crusading for justice through your excellent work to ferret out and expose the greed and lack of concern for the general public that seems to pervade this area. Please continue, more power to you!

Best,
Dexter Gelfand
